Something out of the blue happened to me a few months ago. I found this manuscript in my mailbox. It was unsolicited and had been put together by a group of people I'd never met nor known anything about. An attached note suggested, "Do with it as you choose,' Having published several stories myself, I doubted that there would ever be a market for a story about a boy grew up on the Minnesota Iron Range. Nevertheless, I skimmed the pages and became intrigued by the narrative's honest simplicity. Having several projects to accomplish and deadlines to meet, the story ended up in a slush file where it might have remained. A phone call from a stranger changed everything. I exhumed the story from its limbo and sent it off to my publisher.

Joe was someone I might have passed on the street or in a shopping mall without giving any particular notice. I might have perceived that he was just an everyday, nondescript kind of man working a mundane janitorial job. Yet, as I should have known, there is really no such thing as a common or ordinary person.

Ultimately, psychoanalysts who became involved in the complexity of Joe's life were convinced that he was actually a classic case study of multiple personality. Joe, however, believed otherwise. When I finished this story I found tears in my eyes. I wish that I had known this tormented man
